The illusion of identity in the age of conscious branding
Beloved companion in awareness, esteemed reader,
In this weeks Soul-Letter I want to speak about something subtle, yet unmistakable, a quiet shift in our collective field that many feel but rarely name.
It almost seems as if authenticity has become rare. As if true, self-connected, embodied human beings are fewer and fewer. Instead, we encounter patterns. Archetypes. Roles being performed.
There is the "spiritual one."
The "fitness one."
The "conscious entrepreneur."
The "healer."
The "intellectual."
Each identity polished. Each persona curated. Each one belonging neatly to a tribe.
And where is the manifested spirit, the human underneath?
We live in a world where identity often replaces intimacy with the Self. Many step into meditation, yoga, biohacking, clean eating, activism, or even spirituality, and not as a sacred devotion to the Great Mystery, merely as a subtle strategy for belonging. Evolutionarily, safety once depended on the tribe. Today, that ancient impulse expresses itself through branding oneself by crafting, forming and sculpting that ego persona.
It is less about inner communion… and more about social survival. And here is the delicate truth: assuming an identity can feel safer than being real. To be real means to be undefended. To be real means to not hide behind a label. To be real means you cannot predict how others will categorize you.
"The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are."
... and I want to add to this quote: USE IT!
When one begins to awaken, and even more importantly, when awakening becomes embodied, something shifts. You start seeing the patterns. Not from judgment, but from clarity.
You recognize when someone is speaking from direct experience… and when someone is speaking from a memorized script.
You sense when spirituality is lived… and when it is worn.
Especially in intimate spaces: friendship, partnership, dating, this becomes undeniable. Conversations feel rehearsed. Personas feel constructed. Everyone appears to be "a type."
But the One-Mind cannot be reduced to a type. The Great Spirit does not fit into branding.
What feels confronting for the embodied being is not that others play roles, it is that so few dare to step beyond them.
And yet, compassion arises when we innerstand: identity is often armor. It protects the fragile sense of self that fears exclusion.
Still, armor is heavy.
"The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek."
The treasure is not a better identity.
It is the dissolution of identity.
What if you stopped performing "the spiritual one"?
What if you stopped curating "the successful one"?
What if you stopped optimizing "the conscious one"?
Who would you be without the archetype?
The path of embodiment is not about becoming a new type. It is about becoming transparent to the One-Mind. It is about allowing the Great Mystery to express itself through your humanness – raw, imperfect, alive.
Real presence has no costume.
When you are deeply rooted in the Self, you no longer need to signal belonging. You belong because you are. Not because you perform.
And perhaps this is the quiet invitation of our times:
To lay down the masks.
To step out of spiritual fashion.
To stop hiding behind curated consciousness.
To risk being real.
The One-Mind does not ask you to become someone. It invites you to unbecome what you are not.
And in that stripping away, something luminous remains: simple, grounded, embodied presence.
May we have the courage to meet each other there.
Not as types.
Not as tribes.
But as living expressions of the Great Spirit itself.
Great Mystery,
strip away every false identity we cling to for safety.
Soften the armor around our hearts.
Let us be real before You,
undefended, embodied, awake.May the Great Spirit move through us without performance,
without pretense,
without the need to belong. And may our presence become simple enough
that truth recognizes itself in truth.
With a steady and spacious heart,
Bear Saorin
The One Mind Sanctum
P.S. Notice today where you subtly perform an identity: the spiritual one, the strong one, the wise one. Gently ask: Who am I without this role? Then stay with the silence that follows.
