The Sacred Dance of distance
and why the One-Mind expresses in two.
Cherished friend on The Way, esteemed Reader,
in this weeks Soul-Letter I want to invite you to explore one of the most subtle mysteries of existence, why life appears as two when, in essence, it is One.
Many spiritual teachings point toward unity, toward dissolving the separate self into the vastness of the One-Mind. And indeed, there are moments where all boundaries vanish and only wholeness remains.
Yet there is another doorway.
A doorway not of dissolving into the totality, rather of becoming so deeply surrendered that you begin to witness the sacred play of life unfolding before you.
You become both participant and audience.
And suddenly, something remarkable is revealed:
Life is not happening against you.
Life is performing for you.
The challenge is that most of us have forgotten this.
Instead of appreciating the play, we argue with it.
We tell the director how the story should unfold.
We complain about the script.
We criticize our character.
We wish for different scenes.
And in doing so, we miss the beauty of the performance itself.
Nothing is serious.
Not in the way the mind imagines.
Life is an ever-changing expression of the Great Mystery, moving through joy and sorrow, gain and loss, beginnings and endings.
The suffering mostly comes not from the play itself, rather from our resistance to the role we have chosen to play in this particular scene.
"Life is not a journey to a destination. It is a dance to be lived."
There is a profound secret hidden within polarity.
Many believe polarity exists so that it can one day disappear.
Yet perhaps polarity was never designed to be a battlefield.
Perhaps it was designed to be a dance.
It takes two to dance.
It takes apparent separation for relationship to arise.
It takes distance for wonder to emerge.
It takes polarity for creativity to express itself.
The sun and the moon.
The inhale and the exhale.
The river and its banks.
The lover and the beloved.
Without polarity, there is no movement.
Without movement, there is no experience.
Without experience, there is no story.
And what would existence be without its stories?
The One-Mind expresses itself through countless forms, not because it lacks anything, not because it seeks anything, rather because creation itself is an act of celebration.
A kosmic game of hide and seek where the One pretends to be many.
A grand romance where life continuously rediscovers itself.
"We are here to awaken from the illusion of our separateness."
Many people confuse duality with polarity, and this confusion creates unnecessary suffering.
Duality divides.
Polarity complements.
Duality says: one side must be right and the other wrong.
Polarity reveals that seemingly opposite forces belong to the same whole.
Right and wrong.
Success and failure.
Us and them.
These are expressions of duality within the mind.
Day and night.
The inhale and the exhale.
Stillness and movement.
The river and its banks.
These are polarities. One cannot exist meaningfully without the other.
The purpose of polarity is not conflict.
It is relationship.
The purpose of polarity is not separation.
It is creation.
This is why duality is often called an illusion, because it creates the appearance of division where none truly exists.
Polarity, however, is something entirely different.
Polarity is the artistry of the One-Mind expressing itself through contrast.
Without the silence between notes, there would be no music.
Without the empty space in a painting, there would be no image.
Without the changing seasons, there would be no dance of life.
So yes, duality is to be seen through.
Polarity is to be appreciated.
Not becoming trapped in it.
Not identifying with it.
Not fighting it.
Playing with it.
Like the wave that never forgets it is water.
The wave rises and falls, dances and crashes, appears and disappears.
Yet throughout every movement, its essence remains unchanged.
In the same way, we can fully participate in the dance of life while never forgetting what we truly are.
The wave never forgets it is water.
And because it knows its true nature, it can fully enjoy being a wave.
This is where freedom begins.
Not in escaping life.
Not in possessing life.
Not in controlling life.
In participating.
In becoming an artist of existence.
In responding to what appears with curiosity rather than resistance.
In allowing life to flirt with you instead of trying to own it.
There is something beautiful about maintaining a creative distance.
When we attempt to grasp every experience, every relationship, every outcome, we remove the mystery.
We replace wonder with control.
Yet life thrives in mystery.
The flower blooms because it does not know tomorrow.
The bird sings because it does not possess the sky.
The river flows because it does not hold onto the mountain.
Perhaps we are invited to do the same.
To meet life with open hands.
To enjoy the dance rather than demand a destination.
"The aim of life is simply to be alive, and to live joyously."
Here's a practice for you I'd like to offer
The next time you find yourself arguing with life, pause for a moment.
Take a slow breath.
Imagine you are sitting in a theater, watching the story of your life unfold on a screen.
Observe the character called "me."
Observe their joys.
Observe their fears.
Observe their victories.
Observe their struggles.
Then gently ask:
"What if this scene is exactly where it needs to be right now?"
Not because everything is perfect.
Because every scene belongs to the story.
And every story belongs to the Great Mystery.
The more deeply this is innerstood, the more life transforms from a struggle into a sacred dance.
You do not need to win the game.
You do not need to fix the play.
You do not need to become anything.
You are already what you seek.
The invitation is simply to enjoy the unfolding.
Closing Prayer
Great Mystery,
May I remember the sacred nature of this earthly play.
When I am tempted to resist life, help me soften into participation.
When I forget the beauty of the dance, remind me to look again.
May I walk lightly through this world,
honoring both unity and duality,
the silence and the song,
the stillness and the movement.May I recognize the One-Mind expressing itself through all forms,
and may I meet each moment with gratitude, wonder, and love.
May your steps be guided by Presence,
Bear Saorin
The One Mind Sanctum
P.S. The purpose of the dance is not to arrive somewhere else. The purpose of the dance is the dancing itself.
